Active or passive?

Active means it's cellular equipped with a SIM module and allows you to either ping it for it to reply a location where it was queried.

Passive, being it stores a track-log or bread crumb trail of points of the route travelled which can be retrieved for download and referenced to some mapping software; usually Google Earth.

Something sneaky up your sleeve?

Or even this depending on the phone model? Must have built-in GPS receiver.

Aiyah, no point, lah. The first thing those buggers do, if the intent is to moon-chang your car is to stick a gsm/gps jammer into your cigarette lighter socket to prevent your gps tracker from tracking and your gsm-actuated kill-switch from kicking-in. Nothing within a 10-metre radius of GPS or GSM will reach your car.

It's a US$25 solution the car-thieves are employing these days. Malaysia semua pun BOLEH!
